Ergonomics
Contrary to popular belief, ergonomics is not limited to just desk jobs and how to sit properly. Ergonomics, by definition, is the interaction between humans and their surrounding environment, be it a working environment or not.
What is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics describes how compatible an individual is with his or her surrounding environment. Ergonomics follows a multidisciplinary concept consisting of:
- Anatomy
- Physiology
- Anthropometry
- Engineering
- Biomechanics and kinesiology
- Psychology
The above disciplines compliment each other to optimise the ergonomic workspace that is specific to each individual.
The aim of establishing proper ergonomics is to minimise work-related injuries, improve overall mental and physical health, and improve productivity. These are benefits targeted for an individual. On a larger scale, a company can benefit from investing in proper ergonomics for employees in terms of profitability, product quality, cutting down on medical costs, and last, but not least, a good reputation as a company (just by treating their employees well).
