Case Study:
Jowat Manufacturing (SEA) Sdn Bhd
The Jowat Group is an established global manufacturer of industrial adhesives. Jowat Manufacturing (SEA) Sdn Bhd is its southeast Asian subsidiary, which operates out of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Jowat hired Terramed for the development of a WHP partnership and an initial health screening (Health Day) of employees displayed poor results regarding blood pressure. Based on this, Terramed developed a WHP program aimed at improving these results and introducing their staff to healthier lifestyle concepts altogether.
Objectives and Measurement
The objective of the first 12-month program Terramed developed for Jowat was to improve overall health and well-being among 74 of its employees from factory and office. Based on the results of the initial health screening, the objective parameters chosen to measure the progress of the program were blood pressure and blood glucose levels. Additionally, employees were asked to complete a survey regarding their subjective assessment of any pains they experience regularly and how severely these affect them in daily life. The initial results informed the overall structure of the program and its success would be determined by a comparative analysis of the same values upon completion.

Program results
Blood pressure readings showed significant improvements, with the percentage of employees with problematically high blood pressure (Stage 1 or higher) being cut in half from 55.2% to 27%. Following are the results by category:
Blood glucose levels were not quite as problematic at the beginning of the program. These improved as well, however, with the amount of staff with ‘normal’ levels increased from 81.6% to 95%. The results read as follows:
At the end of the 12-month program, the employees also completed another survey regarding the severity of pain experienced in daily life. Jowat’s staff reported being less affected by pain on a daily basis and this was reflected in the company’s attendance records. The overall improved health amongst the staff who took part in the program resulted in a noticeable reduction in the number of MC leave days taken.
The program was viewed as a success due to the significant improvements recorded in all areas at the end of the program. As a result, Jowat has reengaged Terramed to develop another WHP program, the content of which will be modified according to the experiences gathered during the first. By identifying the modules that are most valuable to their goals as a company, Jowat can now systematically tailor Terramed’s WHP services to fit their needs.
