Their highly recognized equipment makes it possible for patients and health-conscious customers to improve on muscular strength and physiological fitness and to more effectively recover from injuries with long-term rehabilitation.
Rehamed Therapy Equipment
“Our aim for these partnerships is to widen the scope of our care and work with our partners to ensure their members and patients can receive best-in-class therapy and treatments”
The earlier the patient starts their rehab (after injury/surgery), the better it is for them because it prevents their injury from getting bad to worse. This means the earlier their rehab is, the earlier or faster their recovery can be. early rehabilitation prevents potential or further kinetic chain dysfunction, muscle atrophy, loss of range of motion, and potential long-term complications that the injury could cause.
The equipment at Rehamed helps do exactly that!
Leg Press & Trunk Extension and Flexion Machine (Compass 600)
The Proxomed Compass 600 Leg Press and Trunk Extension machines provide many benefits for rehabilitation programs. Firstly, they allow the user to focus on and control the concentric and eccentric contraction of muscles with biofeedback. It is common for those who have undergone surgery or been injured for a long time to be unable to control a limb/muscle to perform a specific movement with control. Our machines can help with teaching the user how to control movement. Secondly, it helps to regain muscular function and strength (mechanoreceptors and proprioception) in a shorter period of time. Third, it allows the trainer to control the range of motion and angle of positioning. Most importantly, it is advisable to limit the range of motion after surgery as this is to prevent the stitches to open up by accident.
In addition, it displays a sinus curve (more on this in the next blog post) that allows therapists to set the speed at which the patient exercises. It also allows us to adjust the range of motion of the joint which needs to be rehabilitated. Following the speed of the sinus curve leaves little room for error and significantly reduces the risk of injury or re-injury. On top of that, patients are taught how to control muscle contraction and motor unit recruitment.
Stationary Bike (Kardiomed 700)
At Rehamed Therapy, we always believe in using the latest technology to assist our patients. The Proxomed Kardiomed 700 Stationary Bike is set at a high standard for Medical Training Therapy (MTT) in rehabilitation in particular.
It utilizes the adjustable pedal height and position to accommodate knee flexion angle limitations (especially after surgery). On top of that, the seat has a horizontal and vertical seat adjustment that caters to the uniqueness of each of our patients. It also allows IPN-testing for us to manage data and measure results, which is a cheaper and safer alternative of testing compared to many other tests (e.g. spiro-ergometry and lactate diagnosis).
It allows for the connection of heart rate monitor for accurate and constant measurement, important for people with cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, it also helps to avoid improper stress on the heart and to increase the efficiency of exercise. The monitor connected to the bike displays target speed and revolutions per minute (RPM) for users and allows patients and trainers to view coordination performance. Plus, it is able to perform Physical Working Capacity (PWC) tests – maximal and submaximal.
Stochastic Resonance Therapy (SRT) Zeptor® Medical
The SRT is a high-performance appliance that has proven itself very successfully as a prevention and therapy method in countless neurological disorders and orthopedic injuries. The SRT was developed by Prof.Dr.Dr.hc Dietmar Schmidtbleicher and his Team from the University of Frankfurt. It works with the physical phenomenon of stochastic resonance. This means that the vibration impulses and amplitudes are random, this is what separates it from normal vibration machines. The fact that it’s random is what helps train neuromuscular stimuli better than most.
The term “SRT Zeptoring” derives from the sensors in nerves which are the so-called receptors. Their activity is enhanced with the un-rhythmic vibrations and additional noise function of Proxomed SRT Zeptor. These processes are especially therapeutic for patients with neurodegenerative illnesses, such as Parkinson or Multiple Sclerosis, but also spinal cord injuries and stroke patients. These patients suffer from mobility issues which makes conventional physiotherapy treatment difficult or even impossible. “Stochastic Resonance Therapy” enables the generation of new nerve and muscle activity without great physical exertion.
Regular therapy with the SRT Zeptor improves many abilities of a human body, such as walking by activation of spinal rhythm, reflex control through higher tension of muscles, and bone metabolism and strength. In addition, the release of neurotransmitters, particularly dopamine, and the motoric learning in the brain through optimization of information selection facilitated. Finally, the operation and growth of neuronal cell complexes are accelerated through stimulation of the cerebellum.
Rehamed Therapy Techniques
Isometric test (Using Leg Press / Trunk Extension Machine and Kardiomed 700)
Isometric testing is a test whereby a participant is required to produce a maximal force or torque by pushing against a resistance that is immovable. At Rehamed Therapy Centre, we have an isometric test machine for the lower limb (leg press), and trunk (abdominal and back muscles).
Why is it beneficial?
Many people, and especially injured patients, are not capable of undergoing a 1RM (1 Rep. Max) test because it requires adequate and efficient neuromuscular activation and neuromuscular unit recruitment – you’d have to be a well-trained athlete to be able to achieve this, which means that this test is not as practical for us “normal” people.
The pros of isometric testing are that it saves time (as compared to the 1RM or other isotonic and isokinetic tests) and injured people are able to undertake it as well. Also, it provides an excellent baseline of your strength, helping us write exercise programs more accurately.
Our equipment/machines in particular also provide bio-feedback to the users and therapists to ensure the safety and correctness of the testing and exercise. This is again particularly important for injured patients.
IPN Test Suite
IPN Test Suite (developed by Proxomed) allows central data management and enables the trainer to upload training data into each patient’s own exclusive card. These cards are slotted into the exercise machines via a monitor that’s connected to the machine and gives full details of patients’ exercise programs. The cards allow the trainer to track training/rehabilitation progress by graphing out test results to view the progress of rehabilitation. It allows bike and treadmill testing. The bikes and treadmill are connected to the computers and display the intensity, heart rate, and condition of the patient.
Through this data management, the team at Rehamed Therapy has access to a patient’s recovery performance progression across a wide range of testing equipment and can provide reports demonstrating these to the patients and treating physicians. This provides transparency and the accountability that Rehamed staff has towards the rehabilitation of our customers.
Additional Rehabilitation Equipment
Hot pack / Hydro collator packs
Hot packs are the packs that are immersed in an apparatus called a hydro collator. They provide superficial moist heat to the part applied. Amongst its many benefits, they primarily decrease pain caused by muscle tension or spasms. This causes vasodilation of the blood vessels which increases circulation to the area. Users that benefit the most from using Hot Packs are patients with Arthritis, Chronic pain, Joint contracture, and Chronic injury where increased blood flow is desired.
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) – Low-Frequency Currents
TENS is the application of low-frequency currents in the form of pulsed currents through surface electrodes to reduce pain. The effect and use of TENS depend upon gait control theory and pain modulation. Pain is an unpleasant disturbed sensation, which accompanies the activation of nociceptors. Nociceptors are the sensory receptors, which carry pain stimuli. Any physical, chemical, thermal or mechanical stimulus like heat, cold, or pressure activates these nociceptors. Once a nociceptor is stimulated, it releases neuropeptide. Users that benefit the most from TENS usage are patients suffer from Chronic Pain Syndrome, Phantom Limb Pain, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, Post-operative Pain, and Obstetric Pain.
Interferential Therapy (IFT) – Medium frequency current
IFT is a type of electrotherapy treatment that uses electric currents to stimulate tissue which provides pain relief, reduction of swelling, and many other health benefits. IFT uses a range of frequencies that stimulate the body to get positive reactions such as increasing the blood supply in an area that increases the healing speed. Unlike TENS treatment, which delivers intermittent pulses to stimulate surface nerves and block the pain signal, IFT machines deliver a continuous stimulation deep into the affected tissue. The stimulation both blocks pain and reduces swelling and inflammation which can cause pain. Users that benefit the most from IFT are patients that are suffering from Back, Neck and Shoulder Pain, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Spondylitis, Bruising and Swelling, Postoperative Pain, Epicondylitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis, Joint Injuries, Overuse Injuries, Edema and Inflammation, Tennis Elbow and various other Sports Injuries.
Ultrasound Therapy
The ultrasound sends wave impulses through the injury site. There are multiple settings on the ultrasound that can be used, depending on the injury. The ultrasound is usually used to promote healing, promote blood flow to the area, break scar tissue, and last but not least, reduce swelling and inflammation.
